Once you have the Gem-A Foundation Certificate in Gemmology, you may continue your studies leading to our gemmology diploma examinations. This will build on your understanding of gems and their characteristics, introducing you to a wider range of the gems and imitations encountered in the jewellery trade. You will advance your career potential by learning more about the factors that define a gem’s appearance and qualities while expanding your practical and observational skills under expert guidance. The Gem-A Gemmology Diploma is accredited at level 5 by the UK Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) – the only gem course in the world so accredited.
There are various ways to study, from full time to distance learning. The course takes a minimum of six months to complete, with a maximum of one year to finish as an Open Distance Learning (ODL) student. The Diploma in Gemmology is awarded on the basis of course work and the final exams. The course fees include exam fees, Gem-A’s comprehensive course notes, crystal models and a wider range of sample stones. A full range of equipment, books and sample stones is available from our shop or online. To download an ODL Diploma Application form, please click here.
You will be awarded our Diploma in Gemmology once you have passed our examinations in theoretical and practical gemmology. We then strongly urge you to apply for election as a Fellow of The Gemmological Association, a prestigious category of Gem-A Membership, after which you may use the designation FGA after your name whilst you remain a paid-up member. As an FGA, you are a member of a select and highly respected international community of gemmologists, and your name and country of residence will be added to the list of FGAs on our website.
Remember, even if you are not yet ready to pursue this full course now, you can take our Practical Gemmology Certificate. This is identical to the practical component of our Diploma in Gemmology, and gives you the flexibility to take the theory components at a later date, working towards your Diploma in Gemmology.
